Grief and Loss

Grief

Counseling Through Heartbreak

It is impossible to go through life without experiencing loss at some point. As human beings, we experience grief in unique ways from feeling blah to profound sadness that changes us forever.

There is no blueprint or rule book for grief and loss. The experience can vary widely from person to person. And, there is no hierarchy on grief. One person’s loss is no more or less than another’s.

Some examples of loss can include:

  • Death of a loved one
  • Death of a pet or animal
  • Loss of an inanimate object (like a treasured belonging or even a home)
  • Ending of a job
  • Breakup of a relationship
  • Letting go of a lifelong dream
  • Grieving an estranged loved one still alive

Most of us have heard about the stages of grief popularized by Elisabeth Kubler Ross:

  • Denial
  • Anger
  • Bargaining
  • Depression
  • Acceptance

We now know that these “stages” are not linear (they do not go in order) and may not quite capture everybody’s experience. But through therapy, we can gain a better understanding of our feelings and thoughts and begin to devise a plan for managing our grief so that our grief doesn’t end up managing us.
